Today, we’re excited to introduce Sarah Biggs - a brilliant freelance surface pattern designer who uses The Pattern Cloud to professionally present, protect, and sell her exclusive hand-painted designs to a global audience with confidence and complete control.

Sarah’s Background and Journey Into Design
Sarah’s creative journey began in childhood, painting alongside her father while wearing a classic ’90s all-in-one apron. She loved getting messy, experimenting with colours, and losing herself in the tactile world of traditional art materials. Her father’s art box - filled with brushes, paints, and intriguing tools - opened her eyes to different mediums, but watercolour quickly became her favourite.
A self-described “visual person,” Sarah has always been drawn to beauty and detail, especially florals. Whether she’s growing flowers, painting them, or wearing them, botanicals have remained a significant source of inspiration throughout her life. Her passion eventually led her to university, where she earned a degree in Textiles and Surface Pattern Design.
Fresh out of university, Sarah opened her own studio in the centre of her hometown. There, she designed and handcrafted home interior pieces - an experience that sparked her desire to run her own business. Seeing her creations go out into the world filled her with pride and solidified her passion for design entrepreneurship.
After several years, Sarah transitioned to working from home and focused on creating surface pattern designs for a wide range of clients. During this period, life evolved - she met her husband, supported him through new beginnings, and welcomed two beautiful children (and a handful of pets!).
In 2022, she officially launched Sarah Biggs Design, embracing freelance work once again and building a brand rooted in craftsmanship, artistry, and authenticity. Fast-forward to 2025, and Sarah now creates original, heirloom-quality watercolour prints for leading fashion studios and brands around the world.
Why Print Design?
When we asked Sarah what she loves most about print design, her answer was immediate:
“The reason I am a print designer is because of the creative process behind the final prints - gathering inspiration and curating mood boards, then moving on to using paints, pencils, inks, and exploring colour and shapes which evolve into beautiful hand-painted motifs.”
For Sarah, the process is therapeutic. From the fluidity of watercolour to the satisfaction of constructing seamless repeats, her work serves as a reminder to slow down and savour creativity in a world that often rushes.

How Sarah Navigates Her Creative Process
Sarah likes to “live in the slow lane,” and that philosophy flows naturally into her design practice. She primarily works with traditional media, embracing intentionality and craftsmanship.
She describes her ideal creative setting as “a painter working in a potting shed in the sunshine, listening to the birds.” While that idyllic moment is rare, it represents the peaceful state where she feels most connected to her art.
On a typical day in her studio, Sarah keeps her process grounded in analogue techniques. She begins by creating a vision board filled with references, genres, colour palettes, potential motifs, and layout ideas. Because she loves designing collections that tell stories, this early stage is essential in shaping her creative direction.
Once her vision is set, the painting begins. Sarah works from a mixture of primary and secondary sources - often surrounding herself with fresh flowers to paint from life. Seeing where the brush takes her is one of her favourite parts of the entire process.
After painting, Sarah scans each artwork and meticulously edits the files to ensure crisp, clean motifs. She then moves into Adobe Photoshop to build arrangements and develop the seamless repeating patterns her clients love.
